The 5-Year Celebrations with Delhi
Wine Club are turning into farewell dinners, somehow.
Last month it was the Chilean Ambassador, Mr. Jorge
Heine and this event at the Uruguayan wine tasting at
the Ambassador’s residence on August 8 turned
out to be farewell for Ambassador William Ehlers.
I am not sure if it was due to the
final goodbye or his hospitable nature, the snacks served
were infinite and the service impeccable. Wines turned
out to be surprisingly delicious. There were loads of
prizes for the members. David Briskman, Deepanker Sanyal,
Sharat Bhasin, Vijaya and Adil Arora received a bottle
each from the Ambassador for answering simple quiz questions
correctly. Coming on time was also recognized, though
the Gurgaon members were fortunate enough to miss the
                          horrific Delhi traffic.
Some people in fact, cancelled out
at the last minute due to the traffic and early arrival
and the closure of the event. The loss was theirs entirely.
They missed out on some delicious snacks and the unending
stream of 11 wines (a dessert red from Pisano accompanied
the finger-licking delicious chocolate fudge was added
by H.E.W.E. on members’ request) which they would
have been the first to taste; the price and health and
taste factor of these wines will make them a winner
soon in the Indian market. The nice gesture on part
of the ambassador to gift a bottle to all the participantswas
                          something they would have relished.
Adagio from Toscanini and Malbec from
Irurtia turned out to be my favourites-the reds scoring
expectedly better than whites and the tannins were surprising
well tamed. The decent alcohol level will be a factor
in the favour of these wines and one hopes the producers
keep it in mind in the coming years.

to thank the Ambassador and his gracious wife
for hosting the evening and gifting wine to all members
there and wishes him a successful stint with the World
bank in Washington DC where they are headed on August
