Consumers
Surveys show that while the consumer is getting convinced
of the advantages of screwcaps, the appearance remains
a turn off. Now an Italian company has bought out
a closure which gives the look of a traditional cork
from outside.
The
Italy-based Guala Closures Group claims its WAK closure
combines a traditional look with the technology and
benefits of a screwcap and hopes to capture the mid
and premium sectors.
Created for standard 750ml wine
bottles, the WAK's closure is not visible externally,
as is the case with most screwcaps on the market.
This is because the thread is inserted into a long
aluminium shell, by first screwing on the bottle neckfinish
and then tucked under a standard BVS neck ring, as
indicated on the company website.
Says Franco Cocchiara, the global
wine co-ordinator of Guala Closures Group: "The
trade is now persuaded by the advantages of screwcaps,
but many consumers remain to be convinced. The WAK
combines the appearance of a traditional closure with
the benefits of a screwcap – and we believe
this will help overcome any consumer reticence."
The closure will be revealed to
the UK wine trade at next edition of London Wine and
Spirits Fair being held at the Excel Center from 20-22
May, where many producers and Importers from India
are expected to take part, as visitors and exhibitors.
Founded in 1954, the group is present
in 4 continents and is a major force in making Aluminium
screwcaps. The WAK products have already won many
international awards. More information is available
