What appears to be a stock clearance sale,
every bottle of wine at the Delhi Airport arrival
shops of Flemingo gets a bottle free, making it
a very good buy for the incoming passengers till
it lasts, reports Subhash Arora
A bottle of entry level Two Oceans or Nederburg that
normally sell for a reasonable $6 are available for
$3 only. Similarly a La Pastolle Chilean Chardonnay
may be a trifle too expensive at $20, but at $10 it
makes a sensible buy.
Even, B & G Chablis at the discounted price
of $10 is worth looking into. I did not see any
Burgundies from Albert Bichot which are normally
displayed at the departure lounge, but if they had
been available in this section, would be a fabulous
buy at this Sale.
The temperature maintained is not the ideal but we
are not living in an ideal world. It is better than
most retail shops in Delhi. One cannot vouch for their
proper storage before entering the airport shops from
the warehouse though.
We have always maintained that sales at duty free
shops is a very good source for buying wine as the
international travel is on the rise. By law, 2 liters
of alcohol are allowed without any problem. Normally
3 bottles of wine (2.25 liters) or even more, are
looked at, quite leniently by the customs people.
Special incentives and offers and stocking of better
quality wines will result eventually in an exponential
increase in sales if the buyers could be assured of proper
storage too.
It is ironic though, that despite 1 for 1 offer on all wines,
the deal is not offered on champagnes. When I told
the store manager that they should either extend the
offer or mention in their promo posters that champagne
was excluded, he sounded perplexed. He had no clue
that champagne was wine too.
Wine is still a commodity for such sales people and this is one of
the reasons why the wine culture is not taking off as fast as it could.
The sale started a couple of days ago and is expected to last a week
or so, till stocks are liquidated.
