Col di Sasso 2003

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this wine being served at the function organised by the Italian Trade Commission last month on the occasion of the release of Italian Wine Guide at the Italian Cultural Center, New Delhi. It was a compliment to the wine  that it finished much before the white, even though the occasion was Lunch.

Made by a well-known American producer, Castello di Banfi, Col di Sasso is  a Super Tuscan for a connoisseur on budget. It is a blend of Sangiovese (70%) and  Cabernet Sauvignon (30%). The ruby red coloured, young and fresh wine has good body and structure with reasonable spiciness. The medium bodied wine is easy to drink, without burning a hole in your pocket.

Serve it cool at 14-16 deg C. Keep the bottle open for 30 minutes before serving. Dip in cold water for 10 mins.

It can be best enjoyed with red or meat sauce   pastas, Lasagne, pizzas with salami or prosciutto or mushrooms, olives and green pepper. Also gives synergy to roasts and chicken wrapped in ham or bacon.

The wine is reasonably priced at Rs.1100 including taxes, in the DSIDC air-conditioned shop in GK-II, Delhi. Hotel Taj Mahal sells it at Rs.1800. Park Hotel in Connaught Place  is slightly higher at Rs.2400 while you can have it at Rs. 2800 in Maurya Sheraton. Indigo in Mumbai has the best deal at Rs.1750. (VAT extra @ 20% in hotels)
